Welcome to Cradoc Golf Club

Ladies Section

History

The Ladies' Section began life in 1969, when the club started, as Penoyre Golf and Country Club; five years later, the club became Cradoc Golf Club. From then to this day, the Ladies have played an active role in the life of our club. The Lady Captain is a Director on the Board of Cradoc Golf Club Ltd; however, before then she was a member of the General Committee as an Officer of the Club. For many years, Lady Members, other than the Ladies' Captain, were also elected and sat on the General Committee.

Today

The Lady Captain runs the Ladies' Section, together with her Vice-Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Handicap Secretary, and the Immediate Past Captain, plus five committee members. All committee members stand down each year and elections for all positions take place at the Ladies' AGM (apart from Lady Captain, who is elected at the club AGM)

There are over 60 Ladies at Cradoc, participating in all categories of membership. New members of any ability are always welcome, whether established players, or new to golf. The Ladies' Captain will meet with all new members, to introduce them to the club, show them how things work and organise a 'buddy system' for new players, to help ease them into playing with the established lady members.

For ladies with a CONGU handicap, competitions are organised by the Ladies' Section on most Thursdays during the summer months between 9.00 and 10.15 a.m. and for those unable to play in the morning, between 2.30 and 2.45 p.m. There are also tee times booked for the ladies on Saturdays between Noon and 12.20 p.m.

Qualifying competitions are run using the PSI system (player self input) and time sheets are posted in the ladies' changing room for tee times. For winter golf (between October and March), the ladies have the first tee reserved from 9.45 to 10.30 a.m. on Thursdays for the monthly Medal, Winter Fayre (played over 12 holes) and Eclectic; a draw for partners takes place at 9.30 a.m. On Saturdays, a winter competition over 12 holes is played, with a draw for partners taking place at 12.30 p.m. Not all weekly competitions are qualifying, but they are interspaced with occasional pairs/team competitions, in order to have some fun on the course too!

Cradoc Ladies organise four Open competitions each year - three Ladies' team competitions and the Mixed Open. Players enter these from south and mid Wales, but also from as far afield as Carmarthen, Newport, Monmouthshire, the Worcestershire & Gaudet Luce and many players return year after year to enjoy the course, the competition and the views!

Cradoc Ladies are part members of the Mid Wales County Golf Association, who run nine competitions and the County Championship each year, on the courses of affiliated clubs; to participate in competitions, players need to become a member by purchasing a County Card. The MWCGA also run a Handicap League, to which Cradoc enters a team each year. Each match may well have different team members, as we try to encourage everyone interested in playing to put their names forward for selection. Cradoc ladies have had some success over the years, the most recent being in 2015, when Cradoc won the Handicap League; they were close runner's up in 2017, needing extra holes to find a winner! The MWCGA hold a County Championship each year and members of the County Team are largely selected from those who compete well at the Championship. In recent years, Cradoc had two players who were part of the winning team in the Wales Golf County Team Championship - a first for the MWCGA. (For more information visit mwcga.co.uk)

Cradoc regularly enter The Daily Mail Foursomes and the Ping Mixed Foursomes - with varying degrees of success! In 2018, we have entered a new competition, the Annodata UK Golf Club Classic, which is an inter-club team matchplay competition with teams of five. We also hold friendly matches, one year at home and the next away, against four clubs (Kington, Burghill Valley, the Herefordshire and Brecon). Each year too, we play a match against Brecon GC for the Maureen Clegg Shield. This was initiated in 1983, to foster good feeling between our two clubs and has been played every year since; we play the match one year at home and the next away. Cradoc has been a member of the Wyedean League for many years too; this is a mixed inter-club matchplay league and in 2017 Cradoc were the winners. One of the Cradoc ladies usually co-ordinates this, by arranging the matches; in 2018 Alison Matthews is the organiser.

Cradoc Ladies wish to encourage all our lady players to support competitions and our teams, mainly by putting their names forward to play when the team sheets are posted. Not everyone will be chosen for each team every time, however, we wish to encourage as many players as possible to play for Cradoc GC.

Every year almost, from the early years of the club, Cradoc Ladies have entered the Wales Golf Ladies' Team Championship - again with varying degrees of success -, which gives our better players the opportunity to pit their skills against players from other clubs from all over Wales, playing off scratch. The highlight playing this competition was in 2009, when the Team Championship week was not only hosted by Cradoc, it was also won by the Cradoc Ladies' team. In recognition of this achievement, a replica winners' pennant is proudly displayed in our club.

Cradoc ladies warmly welcome any new members and hope any new members feel the genuine sincerity of our welcome. We like to think that there is always a very friendly atmosphere in the Ladies' section, in the clubhouse, on the course and in our locker room!
