We began our busy few days on Saturday 22nd August, with our Ladies’ Captain’s Day. Kay, our Captain, had been very busy in the run up to this day (together with Emily the Manager) beginning the revamp of the Wendy House, to make it much more user friendly. That day it was used to offer refreshments to the players as they passed through the 12th - with many thanks to the GKs for the loan of their fridge! With drinks both alcoholic and non-, and nibbles that were very much appreciated, everyone felt refreshed to battle it out with the last six holes! Kay had organised various skills’ challenges with nearest the pin, longest drive, and nearest the line to play for, together with an 18-holes putting competition on the practice putting green. She had decided that we could only take 12 clubs for the 18-holes’ stableford with us that day, and as expected several ladies rued that they had not chosen the right clubs to leave out of their bags!
Kay had been very generous, with everyone receiving a ‘goody’ bag, and then a drink from the bar when we had finished our rounds, not forgetting the aperitifs before play! She had also chosen some lovely prizes, the main ones being of Welsh Crystal, which were very much appreciated by all the winners. Following the presentation of prizes, the players had a lovely meal and Cath Maggs the Vice-Captain, presented Kay with a bouquet of flowers, as thanks from all the ladies for what had been a very happy day.

The next day, a Cradoc team travelled to Borth & Ynyslas GC to play the semi-finals of the MWCGA Handicap League against the team from Builth Wells GC. Although a dry day at the seaside links course, there was a fierce cross wind blowing throughout all the matches, which definitely affected all the players. Our team consisted of Steph Jenkins and Kathy Dobbs, Sarah Parker and Cath Maggs, and Mags Jones and Ronnie Cresswell. The matches were all tight, although Steph and Kathy pulled away towards the end of their match. Sarah and Cath drew the ‘big guns’ and held them until the end, but lost. This left Mags and Ronnie going down the 18th one up, but with the possibility of extra holes – that is until Ronnie holed a reasonably long putt for par to secure the win! Cradoc are therefore in the Final, with the opposition, date and course still to be decided. This was a splendid win!

The last of three busy days involved the Ladies’ Am-Am on Monday 2nd September, and again we struck lucky with the weather – yes, a bit blowy, but dry! 22 teams of four, from clubs as far away as the Vale Resort, Pennard and the Worcestershire battled it out, with two scores to count on all holes and all four on the 18th. The prize-winners’ scores were all in the 80s, except for the winners who had an exceptional score of 90 points, and they were the Cradoc team of Nikki Dutfield, Cath Maggs, Elsie Powell and Peta Brabner! In the two’s sweep, only two players were able to secure a two, and received 24 balls each (Nikki Dutfield, Cradoc and Carol Anthony from Radyr)
